New York: The 500 largest U.S. companies achieved near-record profits last year and retailer Wal-Mart replaced ExxonMobil as the biggest revenue maker on the annual list, Fortune magazine said Monday.
"Most likely that profit growth will stick to the low single digits in the next year or two, in line with sales, as gravity pulls earnings washougal wa back to the mean."
Tully characterized 2012 as a year that saw the return of the "animal spirits", or an urge to action, reflecting an increase in the number of series and mergers and acquisitions.
"For a few years, players are hoarding cash and avoid expansion," Tully said. "In 2012 they took the cash - and they quickly appreciated shares - to work in the best year for M & A in more than a decade."
Wal-Mart reclaimed the top spot on the list of energy giant ExxonMobil after posting $ 469200000000 in revenue, or $ 19300000000 more than Exxon. However, Exxon's profits of $ 44900000000 dwarfed the dealer's $ 17.0 billion.
